USA tops Studyportals student satisfaction research

The USA has topped the higher education student satisfaction ratings in the latest findings released by listings platform Studyportals, which also shows improved scores globally for career support but declines for diversity and quality of life.

The Global Student Satisfaction Report, released by Studyportals in partnership with the British Council IELTS and Uni-Life, is based on more than 102,000 student reviews across 3,059 universities in 124 countries between January 2023 and July 2025.

Satisfaction scores: Overall global student satisfaction was 4.18 out of a maximum of 5.0, a slight decrease compared with 4.21 in the previous survey released in 2023, but still above 4.06 in the 2021 research.

Destinations: The USA leads globally with a score of 4.32, ahead of other major destinations such as Canada (4.18), UK (4.23), and Australia (4.13). In fact, the USA scored higher review scores than the other members of the ‘Big Four’ in every category of the reviews, the authors highlighted.

European destinations performed well, the authors said, with Austria (4.29) and Belgium (4.28) ranked second and third respectively in the global rankings.

The UK made the largest gains in teacher-student interaction, and bucked the global downward trend on the diversity and quality of life scores, highlighting progress made in wellbeing and student experience, the authors said.

Satisfaction measures: Globally, ratings for quality of student life decreased by 4.4 per cent to a score of 4.14, Studyportals said. Master’s students reported the highest scores in the section. Austria, Spain and Germany were the top destinations by this measure.

The fastest-improving category was career development, where satisfaction climbed to 4.13, with the USA, Switzerland and Belgium registering the highest scores in this section.

The authors recommended that institutions facilitate industry professional connections, expand hands-on learning opportunities and leverage faculty research connections to improve scores in this area.

Satisfaction with the admissions process dropped to 4.24, but this was the area that had the most five-star reviews across all categories. The USA, Sweden and Belgium were the top performers.

Teacher-student interaction was the highest-ranked category overall at 4.25, although this was a slight decrease compared with 2023. The USA, India and Austria received the highest average scores on this measure.

However, student diversity was the steepest-declining satisfaction measure, dropping by five per cent to a score of 4.15 and now at its lowest level since 2021, the authors said. The European destinations of Belgium, Germany and Austria scored highest on student diversity reviews.

In the Middle East, scores remained below the global average, but UAE and Türkiye scored above average ratings for student-teacher interaction. Across Africa, most countries lagged behind the global average, but South Africa emerged as the highest-ranked country in Sub-Saharan Africa and scored 4.18 in line with the global average.

Scores for India also improved to 4.21, and India placed in the global top three for both student-teacher interaction and online classroom experience.

Edwin van Rest, CEO and Co-founder of Studyportals, said, “These results show where universities are winning student trust, and where they risk losing it. Students are more confident about career prospects, but increasingly concerned about diversity and their quality of life.

“In today’s competitive environment, these student voices are critical signals for universities. Understanding these perspectives is crucial for shaping policies and programs that genuinely meet students’ needs.”

Megan Agnew, Global Partnerships Manager at British Council IELTS, added, “At British Council IELTS, we celebrate the Global Student Satisfaction Awards for their vital role in showcasing the authentic experiences of students worldwide. By amplifying the student voice, the awards promote the development of student-centered approaches in learning and assessment, fostering a more inclusive global education environment.”
